8 Steps to Home Gardening (Beginners Guide)

August 19, 2022

Starting a home garden can be a daunting challenge. But with experience, you can transition into the hobby with ease. What are the steps to starting your own backyard garden? It’s actually quite simple. Follow these steps:

Begin with the basics of home gardening.

Do not attempt to design the largest garden you can on day one. You could get overwhelmed. Pick a smaller space to work from and increase the size as you become familiar and confident with your abilities.

#1. Finding the best place

If you plan to plant vegetables, you must select a location that receives approximately 6 hours of uninterrupted sunlight daily. Make sure to not put your vegetable garden bed near high trees since the roots could hinder the growth in your backyard. Ensure that it is placed in a place that is easy for you to access daily.

#2. Water access.

You must ensure that you have water in the vicinity. If you don’t have a tap near your desired garden, you’ll require a long hose and an adjustable nozzle. It is vital to water your garden regularly. It is essential if you intend to do all your watering from a watering can and are frustrated by the constant going back and forth.

#3. The soil preparation

After that, you must prepare the soil purposefully. If the soil is compact, you’ll need to be in for a tough job. The soil should be loosened so the plants can develop quickly and drain well. You can till the soil using any broad-ending garden tool, such as a tiller or a regular digging fork.

#4. Incorporate organic compost.

When the soil is loose, you can put in organic compost. Spread the compost over the surface of the tilled soil in the areas you plan to plant.

#5. Make beds.

Make beds by digging out the soil away from the pathways you intend to use and then placing it in the areas you intend to plant. The beds can be built to only a few centimeters.

#6. Grading the beds.

The next step is to perform some bed grading. A garden in your home has to be around 1 meter wide. Wide beds will give the roots of your vegetable plants much more room to spread out and grow.

#7. The garden needs water.

The entire garden should be watered and allowed to rest until the soil has time to become sturdier. It is normal for weed seeds to develop and expand in the days that follow tilling. This is common. Put off planting until this time and go to the garden every couple of days to remove weeds from the bed.

#8. Plant your seeds for the future.

Place your seeds in the beds following the directions for planting included in your seed pack. Make sure you research how you can grow and nurture your plants to ensure the highest yields.

If you follow these steps, you can have your first garden established in just one week. Remember that you’ll have to invest significant time tending to your garden over the coming months and weeks.
