Since the start of the pandemic, a lot of people took interest in gardening. People had been buying pots, soil, and seeds to plant. But only quite a number of them are able to maintain and keep their plants healthy. Gardening is quite easy to learn as long as you do your research and know what your plants need. Studies also show that gardening can be beneficial to your health as it reduces anxiety, depression, and even stress-related symptoms. It also increases your quality of life and satisfaction. If you know someone who’s struggling with depression, gifting a low-maintenance plant would be a great idea. Read along to know few tips on how to keep a healthy garden!
PICK THE RIGHT LOCATION. Picking the right location is beneficial as not all plants require the same needs. Sunlight and shade play a huge factor depending on the kind of plant you have. Certain plants feed on direct sunlight and others may require a shady place.
KNOW YOUR PLANT. Most consumers purchase their plant based on its appearance. If this is a mindset you have, you’ll most likely kill the plant! Before going to your local nursery, make sure to do your homework and pick plants that would grow well in the condition of your home. Climate is also a big contributor to maintaining your plants.
GARDEN TOOLS. Choosing the right gardening tools is as important as picking your plant. For beginners, purchasing starter tools such as a hand trowel or planter, a digging spear, a pruning shear, and gloves should be on your list. The size of the tool also depends on the kind of garden you’ll keep. Micro tools wouldn’t suffice if you’ll be using them for bigger plants! Makes sense, right?
FEEDING YOUR PLANT. Depending on the kind of plant you have, regular watering and adding fertilizer would help your garden grow beautifully. Also, a common mistake, better watch out for overwatering! Being aware of weather changes should be on top of your mind, when it’s summertime, plants may need more water as the sun can dry up your garden. Same as being wary of the winter season, some plants won’t survive the cold, so keeping a mini garden inside your house as a backup is a great way to start.
GARDEN JOURNAL. Growing your own garden takes a lot of time and effort, every plant has different needs. Keeping a journal would help you remember and track your plant’s progress, you can also jot down new information/ observations you learned from your plants or other notes you’d like to keep such as which plant likes direct sunlight, or the best store to get your fertilizer.
No matter what kind of garden you’d like to start, make sure to put your heart into it, always remember, beautiful things take time. Once your garden starts to grow and bloom fruits or flowers on its own, the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes with it is very rewarding!
